Garland's paintings over the past decade have focused on architecture, portraying American homes' interiors and exteriors. Her work uses diverse mark-making and a flexible perspective to highlight each home's personality. Through these depictions, her compositions take on a portrait-like quality, even without human figures. Using wavy lines, skewed perspectives, and vibrant colors, Garland gives each architectural space a unique character, inviting viewers to imagine the inhabitants. Her works, at their core, are a reflection of the innate human need to establish a sense of belonging and security. This fundamental desire to create a home transcends time and place, resonating across cultures and generations. Through her work, she explores the multifaceted nature of home, delving into its physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.
