Frieze LA
Los Angeles, CA
February 16 - 19, 2023
The Pit is happy to be participating in Frieze LA 2023 this year with a three person booth with works by Bella Foster, Kelly Lynn Jones, and Maryam Yousif. Come visit us at booth E05!
Though each artist’s materials, practice, and intention vary, the three artists have notable overlapping tendencies. All three explore the relationships between women, plants, and animals, while simultaneously celebrating and elevating domestic objects and scenes. They embrace bold color, challenge perspective and dimensionality, and leave strong evidence of the artist’s hand in the finished works. Each work is infused with elements of fantasy that creep into their unique renderings of personal life. Foster and Jones create still-lifes and landscapes hovering between realism and surrealism. In Foster’s newest works, her first time working in large scale painting, forefront hilly landscapes and horizontally layered, striated, and stacked architecture form fabulous dollhouse-like reconstructions of views from her memories. Jones’s artworks narratively reflect children’s tales, hinting at mythology through theatrically lit vignettes, symbolic animals, and figurative performance rooted in her very real experience as a mother. Yousif’s ceramic statues feature women toting the cosmic handbags of Middle Eastern mythology and sets of blue eyes referencing Sumerian sculptures placed in temples to serve as proxies for the worshippers. Her works are a blend of her Assyrian heritage, the Western kitsch she encountered on moving to San Francisco, and ephemera of pop culture which crosses geography and time. Together, the three Californian artists explore varying facets of identity - memory, mythology, and daily life.
